Patterns of atmospheric circulation in Western Europe linked to heavy rainfall in Germany: preliminary analysis into the 2021 heavy rainfall episode

چکیده

Abstract The July 2021 heavy rainfall episode in parts of Western Europe caused devastating floods, specifically Germany. This study examines circulation types (CTs) linked to extreme precipitation It was investigated if the classified CTs can highlight anomaly synoptic patterns that contributed unusual North Atlantic Oscillation found be major climatic mode related seasonal and inter-annual variations most CTs. On average, wet (dry) conditions large Germany westerly (northerly) moisture fluxes. During spring summer seasons, mid-latitude cyclone when located over Sea disrupts onshore transport from Ocean by westerlies driven subtropical anticyclone. CT have highest probability being associated with above-average part features (i) enhancement northward track cyclonic system Mediterranean; (ii) anticyclone, further displacing poleward, Sea, enabling band fluxes penetrate Germany; (iii) Baltic coupled northeast (iv) unstable atmospheric In 2021, a spike detected amplitude frequency occurrence aforementioned suggesting addition nearly stationary cut-off low central Europe, during flood episode, anomalies event.

Investigation of the Relation between South and Southwest Iran's Heavy Rainfall with Atmospheric Rivers (ARs).

In this study, we tried to identify the sources of moisture and its direction of heavy rainfall in south and southwest of Iran by using a new algorithm based on atmospheric rivers. For this purpose, daily rainfall of 17 synoptic stations in the period 1986 to 2015 in south and southwestern Iran that have a common time span and fully cover the study area is used. Also from the data set of the Nat...

Heavy rainfall episodes in Ecuador during El Niño events and associated regional atmospheric circulation and SST patterns

To date very little is known about the relation between regional circulation patterns and sea surface temperature development in the Niño 1,2 region and the occurrence of heavy precipitation in Ecuador and northern Peru. The current study uses a comprehensive data set of 2544 Meteosat-3 imagery to investigate the dynamics of heavy precipitation during El Niño in 1991/92. Rainfall maps are retri...

Investigation of the atmospheric circulation anomalies associated with extreme rainfall events over the Coastal West Africa

This study investigates the atmospheric circulation associated with extreme rainfall events over the coastal West Africa. The rainfall data of this study were obtained from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC), spanning from 1981 to 2010. The atmospheric datasets were also obtained from the ERA-Interim reanalysis. The study employed the Z-Index to categorize dry and wet years into...

3. Frequency Distributions of Heavy Rainfall Events

The data used in developing the frequency relations consisted of both daily and hourly precipitation records from Illinois and from nearby stations in surrounding states. The daily data, mostly from nonrecording raingages, spanned the 83-year period from 1901 through 1983. They included data from the 61 precipitation-reporting stations discussed previously (figure 71, whose records had been car...
